One of two things happens here: either 1 the bus driver is the first victim and he dies here or 2 the bus driver sees something that frightens him enough to the group. You would hear something before anyone saw it. Hey, this is a common horror series trope too.

Anyway, this entire scene is meant to illustrate that they expected a bustling village when they arrived, which begs the question. Did they really think the villagers would just take them in? I mean…an insulated village like this would probably be wary of outsiders, right?

I mean…it was pretty obviously rust, right? Someone just established that this village has been abandoned for a year.
